BANGKOK, Feb 26 (Bernama) -- Majlis Syura Patani (MARA Patani) today welcomed the Thai government agreement to its proposal for the ongoing peace process to be a national agenda.
One of its negotiators, Dr Abu Hafez Al Hakim, responded to a statement on the matter by the secretary of the government steering committee for peace talks, Lt Gen Nakrob Bunbuathong, at a talk at the Foreign Correspondents Club of Thailand on Feb 24.
MARA Patani is an umbrella body of six militant groups in southern Thailand that has been engaged in talks with the Thai government for peace in the restive area.
Nakrob had said that Thai Prime Minister Gen Prayuth Chan-o-cha had given approval for the term 'National Agenda' to be put in the new Southern Border Provinces Administration and Development Policy that will go to the National Legislative Assembly for ratification.
Dr Abu Hafez said the national agenda status would ensure that the southern Thailand peace talks would be unaffected by any change in the government leadership.
